Roller Barrels
In Uganda children often have to walk a long way to fetch water, perhaps with no shoes, and then return home with jerry cans of water more heavy than their own body weight. Children and adults tend to carry the heavy water on their heads and this can have a detrimental effect on posture.
To combat this Link International Innovation has begun a new and exciting project to help children who have to walk more than 1km to fetch water. The project is in collaboration with the Rotary Club, who asked us to take twelve 5 gallon roller barrels to Uganda with us on one of our volunteer trips.
We set up a pilot project for the Rotary Club, placing the roller barrels with twelve families and will monitor their use every month to research the benefits of such a water carrier. We hope to get more barrels out to families if the pilot is a success.
